How to choose
Open the big map (N, or tap the minimap). Each area shows its name and level range: green when it suits your level, orange while it is still too strong, grey once it is no longer worth it. Areas underground appear after you have been there.
Levels 1 to 4
- The square in Kestrelby: rats, for your first few minutes.
- Kestrelby sewers (1 to 3): rats and cave rats, and Old Gnasher every other day. It is dark: bring a torch.
- Salt cellar in Brackwater (1 to 8) and Granary cellar in Thornmouth (1 to 6).
- North wilderness (2 to 5) and East wilderness (3 to 6).
Levels 3 to 8
- South Woods (3 to 7): trolls, wolves and bears.
- Kestrel Dungeon (3 to 7): rats, spiders, a wolf den and the trolls’ hall.
- Crypt (3 to 6): skeletons, near the graves in the north-east.
- West troll cave (4 to 7): goblins and trolls, with the Troll Guard at the door.
- The Wormwarren (5 to 8): mireworms, spiders and Grubmaw, who guards the Blade vault.
- Captain Pell’s tower (4 to 6): a ruined stone tower in the north. Three floors down, through poisonous spiders and skeletons. Bring a rope to come back.
- Kittiwake hold (3 to 8) and Cape caves (5 to 9), on Gannet Head.
Levels 8 to 14
- Crypt depths (8 to 12): ten skeletons, in the dark.
- Orc camp (8 to 12): the staked enclosure north-west of Kestrelby, with orc raiders and spearmen. Bring a sword and take them one at a time.
- Ford catacombs (8 to 12): under Thornmouth’s granary, four vaults with two skeletons each.
- Warhorn kennels (8 to 12): four pens of three wolves, for any gear.
- Warhorn depths (8 to 12): orcs. The map says “needs armour” until you wear studded armour or better.
- Brackwater murk marsh (7 to 11): poisonous swamp trolls.
- Warhorn fort (10 to 14): orc warriors.
- Cape wormholes (10 to 14): mireworms, under Gannet Head. Only with good gear.
Captain Pell’s tower and Wren’s lesson
The ruined tower in the north hides Captain Pell’s treasure. Go down through the spider tower cellar and the spider tower deeps to Captain Pell’s floor, three floors below the ground, and open the crate there (from level 5): a smoked eel, 20 gold and a gold ruby ring. Bring a rope to come back up, and an antidote for the spiders’ poison.
Wren, in the Wardens’ Hall cellar in Kestrelby, teaches the orc tongue, and her fee is food. Bring her the smoked eel, say eel and agree. Afterwards the Hooded Orc greets you as a friend and opens his shop (see Items and Shops). If you lose the eel before the lesson, Captain Pell’s crate gives you another.
Where Auto earns the most
In our tests with starting gear, the sewers are the best place from level 2 to 4. From level 5 to 12, the Warhorn kennels earn 1,900 to 3,100 experience per hour on the Careful style, with no deaths. On Balanced, the Crypt depths pass 4,700 per hour at levels 10 and 11.
